How to Stop Procrastinating – “2-Minute Rule”

Are you the kind of person who finds yourself super motivated to get things done on some days and others you can’t seem to get yourself to leave the couch? Do you have a to do list either written down, typed up in your phone, or just on your mind that you don’t ever seem to really get done? Do you put off doing stuff that needs to get done until it actually has to be done? You might be a procrastinator.

Procrastination isn’t something you have to live with, it is something you can overcome. Have you ever heard of the “2-minute Rule”? Well…I read an article a few weeks ago by James Clear that introduced this super simple idea to me and I thought I would share it with you all so you could crush procrastination.

Small tasks and the 2-minute rule: Most of the time, the tasks that we need to accomplish aren’t really hard for us to do, we just avoid starting them for one reason or another. Many of them might actually take us less than 2 minutes to complete…not all but some. Consider putting the dishes in the dishwasher instead of the sink, throwing the load of laundry in the wash while you cook/eat dinner, call and schedule that oil change, etc.

Have you ever thought about the physics of real life? Sir Isaac Newton taught us many years ago that objects that are at rest tend to stay at rest whereas objects in motion tend to stay in motion. True not only for a falling apple but for humans as well.

Once we begin a task, it is much easier for us over time to continue doing it. All we have to do is get started. Not just this time, but every time.

Getting started is more important than succeeding.

Love the progress and the process.

It isn’t about the results but the process of actually doing the work.

The system to get to the goal is more important than the goal.

Focus on taking action.

Bigger goals and the 2-minute rule: If you wanted to write a book, do you think the book might get done if you wrote one page or one chapter everyday? Want to start working out, reading a book, eating healthier, start your own business? All of these things and so many others can be done if we only can take 2 minutes to simply get started on them!

This might not work for everyone, but you will never know if you never try. Put this super simple rule into practice to stop procrastinating and get things done! Best of luck!
